What to Watch for Valentine’s Day

Treat Your Valentine to Some Action

Action Romance, that is. I read voraciously, and when it’s for pleasure I’m usually reading some form of trashy romance novel.  I love them. Can’t get enough of them. Especially when it comes to action-romances. I like a little swash with my buckle, please. So, it should come as no surprise that I have an inordinate fondness for Action Romance movies. They’re the perfect solution to date night: you’ve got the mushy romance stuff, AND (more importantly) you’ve got chase scenes, explosions, murder, mayhem, sword fights, abductions, you name it. Give me a rollicking good Action Romance movie over your insipid “rom-com” any day.

So, in the spirit of the holiday, I’ve put together a list of Action Romance movies that are sure to please your valentine. Who doesn’t enjoy a good action movie, featuring feisty heroines and swashbuckling heroes?

Romancing the Stone

I think this might be my most favorite Action Romance movie of all time, and I’ve got quite a few favorites. Spinster novelist Joan Wilder, played by Kathleen Turner, rushes off to Columbia to try and save her kidnapped sister from certain death at the hands of a super crazy villain. She meets up with Jack, a classic adventuring ne’er-do-well, and mayhem, hijinks, and romance ensues. There’s even a sequel to this movie that’s almost as good as the first.

Cutthroat Island

If you like pirates and swashbuckling, then this movie is definitely for you. There’s plenty of sword fights, secret buried treasure, and Geena Davis kicking ass.

The Mark of Zorro

Not to be confused with the Antonia Banderas movie, The Mask of Zorro (which, by the way, is also an excellent Action Romance movie), the 1940 cinema classic stars a dashing young Diego Vera, played by Tyrone Powers, and his beautiful love-interest played by Linda Darnell. The sword fights in this movie are spectacular, especially considering that Tyrone Powers and Basil Rathbone actually did their own fights. Plus, there’s something cheesily romantic about the line, “You’re more lovely, more radiant, than a morning in June.” Awww . . . .

The Adventures of Robin Hood

Another cinema classic, this 1938 film stars Errol Flynn (the one and only Robin Hood in my book) and the lovely Olivia deHavilland. The costumes are utterly ridiculous – Robin’s tunic sparkles.  It. Sparkles. But, in all seriousness, this movie is definitely a fun one to watch. It’s got plenty of swashbuckling along with the verboten love of Robin Hood and Marion. Claude Rains and Basil Rathbone make excellent villains as well.

Fifth Element

Love literally saves the day in this movie, plus you get the joy of watching Bruce Willis’s trademark sarcasm while he chews up the scenery as the unlikely hero in this sci-fi adventure. Gary Oldman plays a delightful villain, too. Chris Tucker is hilarious in the movie. Plus, the costume design is insane.

True Lies

If you look up Action Romance movie watchlist, I think this movie comes up on EVERY list. It’s a good one, staring action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. Arnold plays a spy who’s kept his family in the dark about his dangerous job. His wife stumbles upon his real career and mayhem and hijinks ensue. Yay, hijinks!

Gross Pointe Blank

This is another favorite movie of mine. The soundtrack alone makes it worth watching. John Cusack makes an unlikely hero as a disenchanted hitman doing one last job: he’s got to kill his high school sweetheart’s father.  Yikes! Joan Cusack has a supporting role in this film, and she is HILARIOUS. As is Minnie Driver, the high school sweetheart.

Undercover Blues

This 1993 movie stars Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner. They play married ex-spies on maternity leave in New Orleans where they get hassled by their old FBI boss, muggers, the police, and the “villainous” El Muerte (or “Morty” as he’s often called, much to his chagrin). Stanley Tucci plays El Muerte, and he’s freaking hilarious. This one is definitely a fun movie to watch.
